The Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association Incorporated (APOMA) is a community and mining organisation representing the historic opal mining town of Andamooka in South Australia. Originally established in the 1950s to advocate for local miners, APOMA formally became an incorporated association in 1960 and continues to represent both the Andamooka community and the interests of its opal miners.
Opal mining remains an important part of Andamooka’s identity, history and economy. APOMA works to support the local industry while providing a collective voice on matters affecting miners, residents, property owners and businesses. Its activities include advocacy, community planning, regional development and collaboration with government agencies and other organisations.
The association also promotes the preservation of Andamooka’s unique opal mining heritage while helping plan for the community’s future. Through its committees, meetings and community initiatives, APOMA encourages cooperation on issues including mining, community services, local facilities, events, tourism and sustainable economic development.
APOMA also provides information relevant to local opal miners and works alongside government authorities on matters concerning the Andamooka Precious Stones Field, mining claims and access to mining information.
Governed by an elected committee drawn from its membership, APOMA remains an important connection between Andamooka’s mining heritage and its future, supporting the people who live, work, prospect and mine within one of Australia’s distinctive opal-producing communities.
