The Lightning Ridge Miners’ Association (LRMA) is a non-profit organisation established in 1966 by miners for miners and incorporated in 1974. Based in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, the association represents the interests of opal miners and works to support the long-term future of one of Australia’s most important opal-producing regions.
The LRMA advocates on behalf of its members with government departments and other authorities on issues affecting the Lightning Ridge opal fields. Its work includes protecting access for individual miners, seeking new prospecting areas, contributing to mining legislation and industry guidelines, and participating in discussions around access management, rehabilitation, environmental responsibilities and safety standards.
The association also actively promotes Australian opal, Australia’s National Gemstone, and provides the secretariat for the National Opal Miners’ Association. Through its advocacy and industry involvement, the LRMA helps ensure that the knowledge, traditions and economic importance of opal mining remain recognised and supported.
In addition to advocacy, the LRMA provides practical services and support for its members. These include access to association-managed puddling facilities, information and general advice, maintenance of access tracks and initiatives designed to support working miners and prospectors.
Run by an elected President and Board of volunteer Directors, the Lightning Ridge Miners’ Association remains an important voice for the local opal mining community, helping protect the heritage, livelihoods and future of opal mining in Lightning Ridge.
