The Queensland Opal Miners Association Inc. (QOMA) is an industry organisation representing opal miners across Queensland and advocating for policies and regulations that support the long-term viability of the state’s opal mining industry.
A key role of QOMA is to work with government departments and regulatory bodies to help ensure that mining legislation, tenure arrangements and industry policies are practical and appropriate for small-scale opal miners. The association has represented the industry for nearly 25 years and continues to provide a collective voice on issues affecting access to mining and exploration areas.
QOMA has also played an important role in Native Title and land access matters. The association has acted as a conduit for Indigenous Land Use Agreements and Right to Negotiate agreements, helping miners navigate the processes required to access areas subject to Native Title. It has also contributed to the development of mining tenure arrangements relied upon by Queensland opal miners.
In addition to advocacy, QOMA provides practical assistance through its Miners Assistance with Documentation program, helping miners work through mining-related paperwork, rehabilitation audits and supporting documentation.
The association is also an active member of the Queensland Small Miners Council and works to promote Queensland Boulder Opal as an important part of Australia’s National Gemstone. Through advocacy, representation and practical support, QOMA continues to support Queensland’s opal miners and the future of the Boulder Opal industry.
