The Queensland Small Miners Council (QSMC) is a representative organisation bringing together incorporated mining associations from across Queensland to advocate for the interests of small-scale miners. Collectively, its member associations represent approximately 4,500 people involved in the state’s gold, sapphire and opal mining industries.
Established in 2001, the QSMC works to ensure that government legislation, regulation and policy appropriately recognise the needs of Queensland’s small-scale mining sector. The council engages with government departments, mining regulators and other agencies to improve communication, reduce unnecessary regulatory barriers and support practical outcomes for miners operating throughout regional Queensland.
The organisation is supported by volunteer delegates from its member associations, who contribute their time and industry knowledge to represent miners and promote responsible mining practices. A key focus is helping small-scale miners operate effectively while meeting regulatory requirements and maintaining appropriate industry standards.
The QSMC also highlights the broader contribution of small-scale mining to regional communities, including its support for local businesses, tourism and employment. By advocating for workable regulation and maintaining dialogue with government, the Queensland Small Miners Council aims to help ensure that Queensland’s gold, sapphire and opal mining industries remain viable, sustainable and accessible to future generations of small-scale miners.
