About Candy Spender Jewels
Candy Spender Jewels is the long-running jewellery practice of Candy Spender-van Rood, whose design career began in Adelaide in 1984. Working initially with polymer clay, stones, crystals and found objects, Candy developed a highly individual approach to jewellery that has always been more about colour, character and personal expression than conventional precious-jewellery rules. She moved to Melbourne in 1986 and has continued evolving the label through changing styles and materials.
A strong influence comes from Candy’s family background. Her mother, Sophie van Rood, was associated with Melbourne’s Banana Room and built an extensive collection of vintage and antique costume jewellery. Exposure to those pieces helped shape Candy’s appreciation for decorative detail, theatricality and the way jewellery can transform an outfit.
Today the collection spans earrings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches, headpieces and other statement pieces. Materials include plated pewter, crystals, vintage components and other decorative elements selected for their visual impact. Many designs combine a sense of nostalgia with contemporary styling, making the work recognisable without being tied to a single era.
Candy’s business has survived because it remains designer-led and personal. The emphasis is on jewellery with personality rather than mass-produced basics, supported by decades of hands-on experience and an eye for unusual materials.
