Nanihi Tahitian Pearls is a specialist pearl jewellery business with a story that begins on the French Polynesian atoll of Takaroa in 1984. The Koan family established a pearl farm there and developed decades of experience cultivating Tahitian black pearls from the black-lip oyster, Pinctada margaritifera. That farming knowledge remains central to the Nanihi brand today.
Rick Koan grew up around the pearl farm and later returned to work alongside his father, Sylvain. After meeting his Australian partner Natalie in 2004, the couple brought the family’s pearls to the Australian market. Nanihi describes itself as Australia’s first company specialising exclusively in Tahitian black pearls, giving the business a particularly focused position within the jewellery sector.
Every pearl used by Nanihi comes from the family’s Takaroa operation. Cultivation can take around 18 months to two years, after which pearls are assessed for characteristics such as colour, lustre, shape, size and surface quality. Only selected pearls are used in the jewellery range, with pieces then created by specialist jewellers.
The collection includes earrings, rings, pendants, necklaces and strands, allowing the natural variations of Tahitian pearls to remain the central feature of each design. Colours can range from deep black through peacock green, silver and aubergine tones, with each pearl carrying its own combination of shape and lustre.
For Australian customers, Nanihi offers a rare direct connection to the source of the gemstone. The business is not simply buying finished pearls from a distributor; its identity is tied to the family that cultivates them, giving each piece a traceable story from the waters of Takaroa through to the finished jewellery.
