About Montal Jewellers
Montal Jewellers is an independent Mont Albert fine-jewellery studio founded in 2008 by father-and-son jewellers John and Chris Wood. The business continues a three-generation family tradition that began with John’s father, Verdun Wood, a jeweller and watchmaker in New Zealand. John and later Chris both spent years working as manufacturing jewellers in Melbourne’s Collins Street jewellery trade before establishing Montal in Melbourne’s east.
Custom design is central to the studio. Clients work directly with owner-jeweller Chris Wood on engagement rings, milestone jewellery and one-off pieces developed around personal style, gemstones and practical wearability. The business deliberately keeps the design and making process connected, with hand manufacture taking place locally rather than being treated as a separate outsourced step.
Montal also specialises in restoration and repair. Older or inherited jewellery can be assessed, repaired or reworked, giving customers the opportunity to preserve important stones and precious metals while creating something better suited to the current wearer. The studio dedicates specific workshop days to hand manufacture, reinforcing its identity as a working jewellery studio rather than only a retail showroom.
Ready-to-wear jewellery is available as well, including pieces made by Chris and selected designs sourced from trusted suppliers.
