About Black Finch
Black Finch is a Melbourne fine-jewellery studio founded in 2007 by master jeweller and gemmologist Raymond de Zwart. Raymond established the business after completing Fine Art Gold and Silversmithing studies at RMIT, bringing an art-school approach to jewellery that combines strong design ideas with precise traditional craftsmanship.
The studio works differently from high-volume jewellery retail. Black Finch produces small runs, one-of-a-kind pieces and made-to-order designs rather than relying on mass production or large quantities of repeated stock. Engagement rings, wedding jewellery and fine jewellery collections are developed with an emphasis on individuality, material character and pieces intended to remain relevant over a lifetime.
Ethical sourcing is a significant part of the business’s approach. Black Finch states that its jewellery is crafted using 100 per cent recycled gold together with ethically sourced gemstones and conflict-free diamonds. Rare sapphires and unusual coloured stones are a recurring feature, giving many designs their distinctive colour and personality.
Bespoke work allows clients to collaborate with the team on a completely new piece, while heirloom redesign can give existing stones and sentimental jewellery a new form. Raymond’s experience in stone setting and gemmology supports the technical side of that process as well as the design.
