About Gillian Hillman

Gillian Hillman is a Melbourne bespoke jewellery designer who has worked from her St Kilda studio for more than three decades. Her studio practice dates from 1989, following earlier work at the Meat Market Craft Centre and formal Gold and Silversmithing Design studies at RMIT. That long background in studio jewellery has allowed Gillian to develop a recognisable design language while continuing to make work directly for individual clients.

Her jewellery ranges from strong combinations of gold and silver through to pieces featuring Broome pearls and unusual coloured gemstones. Texture is an important part of the work, and many designs are intended to be worn in more than one way, giving the wearer flexibility rather than treating the piece as a static ornament.

Bespoke commissions are central to Gillian’s practice. She works directly with clients to understand their style and then develops jewellery that responds to the person rather than applying a fixed house formula. She is also happy to remodel older jewellery, reusing stones and gold when a client wants to retain the material or sentimental value of an existing piece while creating a new design.

Gillian’s career also includes exhibitions, teaching and continued professional development in specialised jewellery techniques. Her work was shown through Makers Mark for more than 20 years, helping build a loyal following beyond direct studio clients.
