Opals, as we know, have the most amazing play of colour. It’s like the universe has its own playground in there. However, due to its semi-hardness (5-6), people barely think of using Opal as an engagement ring as they are too nervous of damaging the stone.
Every gemstone has its weakness, including even diamonds, so it’s not just about the hardness that provides durability. With a smart design and proper care, opal can be also a nice choice to use for an engagement ring for you to keep as a family heirloom.
As the national stone of Australia, the country is proud of being the main supplier of opals in all kinds (at least most). Depends on the area you travel to, a particular type of opals can be found as the local specialty. However, they always have all range of variety for you to choose from since it’s not hard for them to source from other interstates.
During our last family trip to Queensland, we made a detour to a local opal family business, that offers high-quality opals that were mined, cut and sold all by themselves. To me, it’s a special treat.
