Custom jewellery design covers everything from concept to finished piece. Many jewellers can guide you through stone and metal options, then create made-to-order designs to suit your style and budget.

Burchell’s Jewellery is a Southern Highlands jewellery business built on more than a century of family craftsmanship. The Burchell jewellery tradition began in 1908 with Walter Burchell, who later established W. E. Burchell in Bowral in 1923. The business went on to serve generations of local families until 2009, and today the family legacy continues through third-generation jeweller Hamish Burchell.
Hamish began learning the trade while still at school, working alongside his father and developing skills in jewellery repair, clockmaking and precision craftsmanship. He later completed his apprenticeship in Sydney and went on to build extensive experience in jewellery manufacturing, hand engraving and gemmology.
His qualifications include a Diploma in Gemmology, Fellowship of the Gemmological Association of Australia and Fellowship of the Gold & Silversmiths Guild of Australia. In 2009, Hamish was recognised by his peers as a Master Jeweller. His career has also included teaching practical gemmology and training several apprentices, including award-winning jewellers.
From his Southern Highlands workshop, Hamish specialises in bespoke, handcrafted jewellery created for clients in Australia and overseas. Each commission combines traditional jewellery-making skills, gemmological expertise and a highly personal design process.
Burchell’s Jewellery continues a three-generation family tradition focused on integrity, precision and creating meaningful pieces designed to become future heirlooms.
Below is an overview of the jewellery services offered by this store.
Custom jewellery design covers everything from concept to finished piece. Many jewellers can guide you through stone and metal options, then create made-to-order designs to suit your style and budget.
Gemstone sourcing helps you find the right stone based on cut, colour, clarity, size and budget. It's useful if you want something specific or want expert guidance comparing options before setting.
Repairs can include resizing, clasp replacement, chain repairs, polishing, re-stringing and stone re-setting. Ask about turnaround time and whether repair work comes with a service warranty.
In-store shopping is ideal if you want to see pieces in person and compare options with guidance. Many jewellers can advise on fit, styling, care, and gift ideas while you browse.
Jewellery valuations provide written documentation for insurance, resale or estate purposes. A valuation records materials, gemstone details, condition and an assessed value using current market factors.
Share what stood out, from service and pricing to the finished piece. A quick review helps the next shopper know what to expect.
