Whitakers Jewellers is a five-generation Newcastle family jewellery business whose history began in 1903. The Whitaker family has operated jewellery businesses across the Hunter for more than a century, with the current generation continuing a strong focus on custom design, diamonds and personal service.
John Whitaker Junior began training in the trade with his father in 1987 and later studied at the Gemological Institute of America in California. He is a qualified manufacturing jeweller, GIA diamond grader and gemmologist, combining practical bench knowledge with formal gemstone and diamond expertise. John took the helm of the family business in 2006, and his daughter Eden now represents the fifth generation working within Whitakers.
Custom design has become a defining part of the modern business. Clients can work with the team on engagement rings, wedding jewellery and one-off pieces created around personal stories, gemstones or significant occasions. The store also offers ready-to-wear fine jewellery, but the family’s workshop heritage remains central to the way it presents itself.
Whitakers has evolved through several locations over its long history. After operating a custom-design boutique in Cooks Hill, the business moved to a larger premises in Charlestown, creating a permanent base intended to support the next generation of the family.
For Newcastle and Hunter customers, Whitakers combines unusually deep local history with current gemmological qualifications and modern custom design. It is a business built around long-term relationships, with families returning across generations for engagement rings, milestone jewellery and pieces intended to become future heirlooms.
