About Launceston Precision Jewellers

Launceston Precision Jewellers is a Tasmanian family jewellery business with roots reaching back to 1882 and a modern business established in 1992. Across generations, the family has manufactured, repaired and sold jewellery in Launceston, building the current studio around hand craftsmanship and long-term client relationships rather than mass production.

Ben Nicholls joined the business in 2002, working with his parents Robert and Lynda after finishing school. He has since built more than two decades of bench experience and completed a Diploma in Gemmology, combining practical jewellery-making skills with specialist knowledge of gemstones. That blend of trade experience and gemmological training supports the studio’s custom-design and repair work.

Launceston Precision Jewellers manufactures jewellery in-house, with each design approached individually. Services include custom design and manufacture, remodelling, repairs, pearl threading, valuations and gemstone testing. The business also maintains an unusually broad technical connection to timepieces, offering watch and clock services as well as barometer manufacturing and restoration.

The studio deliberately continues to handcraft jewellery even as CAD, resin printing and other technologies have become more common in the industry. Its emphasis is on expert knowledge, careful making and a direct relationship between the client and the people doing the work.

For Launceston customers, the business provides a locally made alternative for bespoke jewellery and a practical workshop for maintaining, remodelling and valuing existing pieces, supported by a family history spanning well over a century.
