Steve the Jeweller

Steve the Jeweller is the independent Darwin practice of manufacturing jeweller Steve Erdelyi, whose career in the trade began in 1984 when he started an apprenticeship at The Jewellers Workshop at the age of 17. As the Northern Territory’s only apprentice jeweller at the time, Steve regularly travelled to Melbourne to complete the formal training components of his apprenticeship while building practical workshop experience in Darwin.

One of the early milestones in his career was the Ramford Collection, a limited series of 1,000 individually made pieces using natural-form gold nuggets. Steve spent more than two years creating the collection by hand. During the 1990s he also contracted to a large number of jewellery retailers, designing and manufacturing stock and carrying out repair work for stores across the region.

Steve later took over the workshop lease at The Jewellers Workshop and continued operating independently. Today he works from a home-based workshop and meets clients directly rather than maintaining a traditional retail shopfront. His services centre on handmade jewellery, remodelling and repairs, which makes the business particularly relevant for customers who want to reuse an existing gemstone, transform sentimental jewellery or commission something that is genuinely one of a kind.

For Darwin customers, Steve offers a direct maker-to-client relationship backed by more than four decades in the jewellery trade. The focus is practical craftsmanship, personal design and giving existing jewellery a useful new life rather than relying on high-volume retail stock.
