About Metal Urges Fine Jewellery & Diamonds
Metal Urges Fine Jewellery & Diamonds is a Hobart custom-jewellery studio founded by Tasmanian master jeweller Chris Hood. What began as a one-person business more than two decades ago has grown into a specialist team of jewellers, designers and craftspeople creating fine jewellery from concept through to completion in Tasmania.
Chris is a fully qualified jeweller, certified gemmologist, diamond setter, diamond grader and jewellery appraiser, and is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Australia. The wider team includes qualified jewellers and CAD specialists, allowing the studio to combine traditional bench work with modern design technology.
Custom work is the heart of Metal Urges. The studio is particularly known for platinum and 18-carat gold engagement rings, but also creates necklaces, bracelets, anniversary pieces and other individually designed jewellery. Consultations can cover style, metal, budget, gemstones and practical wear before the design moves into manufacture.
Gemstone sourcing is another defining strength. Chris travels within Australia and overseas to source diamonds and coloured stones and places strong emphasis on ethical provenance and direct relationships with miners and suppliers. The business has also developed expertise in Tasmanian sapphires and other unusual natural gems.
Metal Urges keeps design and workshop spaces close together so clients can remain connected with the making process.
