Speaking of jewellery Cleaning, probably one of the most neglected jewellery topics around. We summed up 3 of the best methods.

Speaking of jewellery Cleaning, probably one of the most neglected jewellery topics around and something most people don’t have much knowledge about. How many of you count on the jeweller to recover the sparkles, hands up!

To save you some effort, here are a couple of tips on jewellery cleaning so you can make it happen at your home.

Method 1: Warm Soapy Water

This is the most common daily cleaning method you would be recommended to do.

Ingredients

  • Water(lukewarm)
  • a few drops of dishwashing detergent
  • a small brush (a standard toothbrush will do)
  • a piece of dry cotton cloth and/or blow dryer.

Method

  1. Mix the water with the detergent
  2. Put your jewellery into the warm soapy mixture
  3. Let it all soak for approx. 10 to 15 minutes
  4.  Use the toothbrush to gently brush every corner of the jewellery piece(s)
  5. Rinse the soap off under running water
  6. Dry the jewellery piece(s) with a blow dryer and/or cotton cloth, till the bling has returned :).

Suitable jewellery

All kind, particularly for pieces of jewellery set with stones that are not hard enough to stand ultrasonic cleaning, high temperature and/or chemicals.

Downside

For some tough stains that have been accumulated over a long period of time, this method will not be sufficient. It applies to metals quite well, but to diamond, for instance, which is hydrophobic it might be difficult to return its original shine.

Method 2: Ultrasonic Jewellery Cleaning

If you are a diamond and/or sapphire lover with a proud collection and would love to clean them frequently, instead of visiting jewellers, occasionally even pay for the service, you might want to spend as little as $50 dollars to get an ultrasonic jewellery cleaning machine and do the easy cleaning yourself.

Suitable Jewellery

All-metal, diamond, sapphire and ruby jewellery.

Downside:

For piece set with a stone (e.g. emerald, aquamarine and tourmaline), that isn’t as hard as above, it can get damaged during cleanings. It involves a bit of chemical so it needs to be stored out of reach of kids.

Method 3: Using a special jewellery Cleaning Product

There are a handful of products dedicated to jewellery cleaning that you can bring home for your occasional jewellery cleaning. They are commonly bought from jewellers or special jewellery stores, and come with a complete package including brush and instructions.

Suitable jewellery

Wide range depending on its instructions

Downside

This method can be pricy, and not one size for all, so be aware of the instruction in case it does not apply to the jewellery you have.

Conclusion

Above are the little hints for fine maintenance of your sparkles, hope this helps and please let me know your experience, happy to share and always love to learn.
